Spring in Chicago!!
I loved this show! The Vic is a perfect venue for a beautiful spring night in Chicago and this one did not dissapoint. I met up with a buddy I've known since I was 12 and he and my wife spent our pre-show catching up in one of the fine pubs on Sheffield. After that...insane bliss!
The house was packed and jumping all night; The Beam within' 20 yards of us !!! Mickey on an electric thumbharp and the pulsing unrelenting backbone.
Mickey got kinda frustrated during "Fire" due to some techinical problems with the vocals but other than that, an intimate and well recieved evening...
A memorable highlight was when one of the Vic's veteran barmaids got nailed by a tripping swirling dervish...! BAM!! She scooped up the tray and headed back to the bar without missing a beat.
This recording is an excellent representation, enjoy!
What a night!!!

FIRE
yeah, the previos post is on. cool stuff, but being a deadhead, don't download this for the fire on the mountain by any means, pretty boring. the originals are decent though.

Good but...
Umm maybe you had to be there or something?
Fire is being a bit overhyped if you ask me as is this combo. Maybe with a bit more playing time together they will be five star but certainly not yet.

Particlegratefulnomenal
How's that for a new word? Since words are hard to find to describe how good the show and sound of this really is. Highly recommended, unless you like slow melodies and vocals. The jamming is intense. Like another reviewer, having a hard time filing this one away yet, getting some heavy airplay on my cd players.

GET THIS SHOW!!!
I admit, I was certainly a bit skeptical when I heard about Mickey and the Particle boys teaming up, but man they do make it work! They energy is over the top when they get into it and spread out and almost trippy at times too. A total roller coaster ride. The sound quality is solid as well. If you enjoy anything in this genre (New Deal, Lotus, STS9, etc)-you'll appreciate this...download it for a great addition to any catalog!

Smokin
Sound Quality - Taping Quality
From what I can tell in my buds, and laptop speakers, this is great. I would give it a 90-100 out of a possible 100 considering I haven't listened to it on a nice system yet. If possible, the audience here actually adds to the experience at some points.
Music/Show/Band Review
Whoever rates this show poorly, please provide some links to what you're groving to. Wow, these guys have so much energy, and yet they don't sound like Trey (which is important) I must say they--this and Particle--are maybe the best live act there is currently.
When I first heard the Fire on the Mountain, I was transported to that magical night in Cornell, in 1977. The crowd makes the show so much better that night, and in some cases feeds into the positive energy of the listening experience in the tracks here. Having said that, a SBD of this show is definitely good enough for collection, if you like to have both.
They ride this right into Liminiferous Ether, Which jams very very nicely, smokin. This band is technically execellent!
The rest of the songs are great too! If the other shows are this hot or even hotter, all I gotta say is that's smokin!
Well, thanks to the tapers, archivists, archive.org, and last but not least, Hydra for making it all happen. Many a great show to you and yours from Kent Ohio!

Linear, very linear
This show is ok, but, the jams are very linear. The jams travel in two directions: up or down. I hear no out-of-control skidding-outside-the-lines jamming here. Don't get me wrong. This guitarist is definatley accomplished. I'm just saying these guys need to learn how to slide it sideways and upside down and around the corner and turn it inside out. They need to learn how to color outside the lines. Put these guys on a strict diet of Miles Davis bitches brew and maybe some MMW for desert and these guys will be awesome in no time.

yes!!
Thanks a bunch for putting this show up. I missed the show here in town last night (4/19) because of my daughter being sick, so its nice to have a show to make me feel better. I am a taper, and was going to tape the 4/19/05 Madison Theater Cov,Ky/Cincinnati,oh show, so I really want the tapes. does anyone have this one ready to go?
I know a taper buddy who went, but he decided not to bring his gear, which sux since I know the sound guy, and could have hooked him w/ a sbd patch. Anyways, thanks to mr. NAK 300 for putting the VIC up here, and personally i think the show sounds real good. I owned a pair of NAK 300's for years, and I still think the world of them, and there performance. There is just something about taping GDead based stuff w/ good 'ol NAK's:) The muddiness could have been cleared up very easily w/ an eq, or maybe using X,Y around the sbd instead of the balcony. I am willing to bet that it's the balcony that gives this show a bit of muddiness, and not the mics, etc. Mic placement is VERY important!! I allways find my shows to be a bit muddy when i do balcony taping. I prefer to set up around the sbd. Thats just me though.
Again, thank you taper, and Archive, this whole thing is just incredible!!! ...and to think of the days I used to trade cassettes by mail through RELIX, or Unbroken Chain mags...
although when you wait over a month for just a show or two, they mean ALOT more to you than an overnight download ;) just my lazy 2 cents.

Surprisingly good...
...or maybe not so surprising when you consider the peeps in the band.
Still, you never know how these musical alchemy experiments are going to go. This might have been really cheesy and silly. It's not.
Instead, it's flat-out radiating heat. Mickey adds even more energy to a band already fully charged, and the results are swirling jams that mutate from deep space stuff to snarling cosmic dogs that bite you on your ass.
Sound is good but not great, i.e. a bit muddy at times. Charlie Hitchcock's raging guitar lines come through crystal clear, however. Which is good, since he really had a fantastic night.
